Kobe Bryant’s upcoming retirement will also signal the last time we’ll see him wearing his Nike sig model on the court. The Kobe series has always been cutting edge, implementing whatever the latest Swoosh technologies were and making them work on the court for the Black Mamba. Carrying on the tradition, Nike Basketball’s unveiled the newest model, the Kobe 11.
Kobe and designer Eric Avar set out with the intent “to perfect Flyknit for basketball” as they worked on the Kobe 11. More specifically, Avar said he wanted the shoe to be about performance first. “I think the legacy for the Kobe shoe would hopefully be first and foremost about true performanc…lightweight, responsive, and kind of the essence of simplicity.” The silhouette of the shoe isn’t a huge departure from the low-cut look of Kobe 10. But there are slight changes that set the Kobe 11 apart from its predecessor.
The new model uses advanced and even stronger version of Flyknit for the upper, full-length Lunarlon foam, a Zoom Air unit in the heel and mesh tongue for breathability. And, of course, the storytelling in the details as deep red and black ‘Achilles Heel’ colorway “features a graphic representation of the hero on the right heel, while the left features four-stitch marks representing the four feet of thread used in Bryant’s 2013 Achilles surgery.”
As his career comes to a close, Kobe’s latest and last sig comes to retail on January 9 globally at Nike.com and Nike Basketball retailers.
