Collecting shoes has never really been a habit of mine. Amassing them may be a better word because collecting brings to mind idea of obtaining an item and placing it on display to be marveled at but never quite used. Every shoe I buy meant to be worn. Period. The only exception would be the 2016 retro of Nike’s Air Pressure.
Back in 1989, the Pressure retailed for $190, which doesn’t seem astronomical in today’s climate but was way more than anything else on the market, including the Jordan 4 with its $110 price tag. The high ticket made them unattainable for middle-school me and I’d say that applied to most others as well because you simply never saw these things being worn. Add to that they flopped on the market in comparison to Reebok’s Pump models and Nike pushed the Pressures far back in the darkest corners of company history hoping people would forget that this colossal flop ever existed.
Twenty-five years later and we haven’t forgotten. The shoes definitely represent a piece of history you were never quite able to get your hands on, a relic from the time when big, bulky hoop shoes were the thing. Thanks to the upcoming retro, a lot of Swoosh diehards will finally be able to fulfill the prophecy, complete with the wacky gadgets and accessories that made the Pressures seem so alluring decades ago.
The $300 price tag will scare away a lot of buyers, but I’m not deterred. If I can beat the bots and get the opportunity, I’m copping without hesitation. All that means is I’ll skip buying a couple of crap shoes I had no business buying anyway. If I’m able to actually land a pair, I wouldn’t dare rock these new relics because they look cumbersome and probably are heavier than 6-inch Timbs. Instead, they’ll be one of the first shoes I’ll ever buy in my size without any intentions of ever wearing them. They’ll find a place in my home where they will sit somewhere highly visible, strictly for nostalgia purposes.
